WHERE IT ALL STARTED

2014

———

The house in which I live is isolated on the mountain. A tourist town is a few miles down into the valley. People come here for the river rapids and the beauty of nature, but they don’t realize what really lurks in the shadows of the trees. I did not make up these stories; they were passed down through the generations. I know them well; every word flows through my veins as if they are a part of my soul.

Five generations of my family grew up in this house. As a young child, I remember sitting on my great grandfather’s lap as he told me stories. I was mesmerized by his words as he puffed on a cigar. He would tell me about the witches and the undead that rise at night. I never had to worry though; he always ended the stories by saying that I was always safe because I was a part of the mountain.

Many years later, I remain the only one from the blood line left. The heritage that flows through the house is a constant reminder of where I came from and those that have passed. The stories all faded over time until a lone man knocked on the door. I was hesitant at first because we were always told to hide when a stranger knocked on the door, but I was no longer that scared little boy anymore. After looking through the window, I saw a skinny man who seemed anxious. My mother always told me to never open the front door to strangers, but I never listened to her anyways.

“Can I help you?” I said through the slightly opened door.

“Are you Jamieson?” the man nervously responded.

My silence was enough of an answer for him to continue.

“My name is Steven Lebout and I work for The Sentinel.”

I must have had a confused look or something because he felt the need to clarify.

“It’s the local newspaper. I’m doing a story on mountain folklore for the fall issue. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions? I promise that I won’t take up too much of your time.”

I already broke Rule #1 by not hiding and Rule #2 by answering the door. My father would’ve been disappointed in me for breaking Rule #3 as I opened the door and allowed the man to enter.

“Thank you in advance for your time, I just have a few questions,” he said, looking around the living room.

“Not too many people come up here,” I said nervously.

“Can you really blame them? With all the stories that surround this mountain. I’m hoping to clear up some misconceptions, kind of find out why all the myths exist.”

“Myths exist for a reason.”

“And what reason would that be,” he replied, pulling out a small tape recorder. “Do you mind? I am horrible with taking notes.”

“I, I… that’s alright, I guess.”

He was making me nervous and I realized why Rule #1 and Rule #2 were at the top of the list. His eyes roamed every photo on the mantle.
